Planning Checklist

Hungarian citizenship document planning

A simple community planning checklist for the five public tracker pathways. This is not legal advice and should be reviewed against the current instructions of the competent Hungarian authority before launch.

File in person unless instructed otherwise

Hungarian citizenship matters are commonly handled through Hungarian consulates, embassies, and domestic authorities. Confirm the current filing practice with the office before booking.

Foreign records may need authentication

Civil records often need apostille or legalization plus accepted translation. Requirements vary by issuing country and filing office.

Keep verification and naturalization separate

Verification confirms someone may already be Hungarian. Simplified naturalization is an application to acquire citizenship.

Language requirements are route-specific

Simplified naturalization routes require Hungarian language knowledge. Verification cases normally do not use the same requirement.

Citizenship by Descent / Verification

For people who may already be Hungarian citizens through a Hungarian parent or family line and need official confirmation.

Act LV of 1993, §§2 and 10
  • Applicant birth and identity records
  • Parent, grandparent, or ancestor civil records showing the Hungarian line
  • Marriage, name-change, divorce, or death records needed to connect each generation
  • Translations, apostilles, or legalizations where required by the accepting authority
  • Any prior Hungarian citizenship, passport, residence, or registry evidence available

Simplified Naturalization by Hungarian Ancestry

For applicants with a Hungarian ancestor or Hungarian origin who are not already Hungarian citizens and can demonstrate Hungarian language knowledge.

Act LV of 1993, §4(3)
  • Applicant civil records and photo identity
  • Ancestor records showing Hungarian origin or family line
  • Hungarian language readiness evidence or consular assessment preparation
  • Criminal/background records requested by the filing authority
  • Translations, apostilles, or legalizations for foreign documents

Simplified Naturalization by Marriage

For applicants married to a Hungarian citizen for at least 10 years, or 5 years with a shared child, who meet the Hungarian language requirement.

Act LV of 1993, §4(3a)
  • Marriage certificate and spouse identity/citizenship proof
  • Child birth record if using the 5-year shared-child route
  • Applicant identity, birth, and personal status records
  • Hungarian language readiness evidence or consular assessment preparation
  • Criminal/background records and authenticated translations where required

Naturalization by Residence

For applicants qualifying through residence in Hungary, including standard and preferential residence-based routes.

Act LV of 1993, §4
  • Residence history and lawful stay evidence
  • Applicant identity, birth, and personal status records
  • Livelihood, housing, or integration evidence requested for the route
  • Language/civics requirement evidence where applicable
  • Criminal/background records and translations where required

Other Hungarian Citizenship Route

For declaration, renaturalization, adoption, refugee, stateless, minor, exceptional, or another less common route.

Act LV of 1993, §§4(2), 4(4), 4(5), 4(7), 5 and 5/A
  • Route-specific eligibility evidence
  • Applicant identity and civil status records
  • Parent, adoption, refugee, statelessness, or prior citizenship records where relevant
  • Authenticated translations and supporting declarations requested by the authority
  • Oath, certificate, or passport follow-up records if applicable

Legal wording and checklist content should be reviewed before launch. The tracker intentionally keeps route categories broad and does not replace official instructions.
